Learn How To Install Blinds With Easy Step-By-Step Instructions

Nearly all size blinds and categories of window coverings follow the same basic steps. You'll need a measuring tape, a few screws, a level, and possibly some pre-drilling depending on the window casing.

Purchase window treatments specific to your window frame measurements; attach the brackets using a drill (unless you're using no-drill blinds), place the headrail into the brackets, attach the valance to the headrail, and secure the window blind wand if necessary to complete the process.

What You Need to Install Blinds

Although different types of blinds might require a unique installation process, in general, you will need the following items to install window coverings:

  • Measuring tape, to measure the window frame and blinds
  • Screws or nails, to install the brackets that will hold the blinds
  • A level, to make sure the blinds are even
  • Drill and drill bit
  • Pre-drilling (depending on window casing)
  • Your window treatment of choice

If the window frame is somewhere out of reach, ensure you have a footstool or ladder to complete the installation.

Window Blind Installation

It can be intimidating to think about installing one's own window blinds, but with a few simple steps, it's more than doable. Everything from aluminum blinds to vertical blinds can be installed at home.

There's no need for DIY know-how or special tools; just follow the detailed instructions below.

1. Inside or Outside Mount?

This is the first important decision to make. You'll need to choose whether to mount the blinds on the inside or outside of the window frame. This will affect the bracket locations and bracket placement.

For inside-mount blinds, you'll need to measure from the edge of the window casing to where you want the blinds to stop. This measurement will be used later to determine how much hardware is needed. For outside-mount blinds, measure from the edge of the window casing to the desired length of the blinds.

2. Measure and Buy

Next, use your measuring implements to take accurate measurements of the width of the window opening and purchase blinds that are slightly smaller. For example, if your window is 30" wide, buy blinds that are between 28-30". This will ensure a snug fit and avoid light leakage.

3. Open the Package

When the blinds arrive, open the package and ensure everything you need is included. This might include screws, brackets, or other hardware, as well as product instructions. Gather your materials and prepare to install.

4. Mark the Bracket Holes

The first step is to mark the bracket locations. For inside-mount blinds, measure from the edge of the casing and make a small mark at that point. For outside-mount blinds, measure from the edge of the casing to the desired length and make marks at each end. You'll also need to mark for a center support bracket

5. Drill Pilot Holes

Now it's time to pre-drill the holes for the screws or nails. This is necessary if your window casing is made of a different material than the blinds; it helps to avoid splitting the wood. For inside mounts, drill the holes at the marks you just made. For outside mounts, drill one hole in each end mark.

6. Install the Window Blind Brackets

Once the holes are drilled, it's time to install the brackets and safety bracket. For inside mounts, place the bracket against the window casing and screw or nail it in place. For outside mounts, insert one end of the bracket into the hole and then use a level to ensure it is straight before drilling the other hole and securing it in place.

7. Hang the Blinds

Finally, take your blinds and insert the top into one of the brackets. Then use a level to ensure it is hanging straight and evenly before proceeding to the other bracket.

Once both brackets are in place, use a screwdriver or hammer to secure the blinds in place. Don't forget the center support bracket and valance clips if you're adding a valance.

If the blinds are chain operated, you may need to drill the chain holder into the wall – but if they're cordless blinds, no need to worry.

And that's it! You've successfully installed your own window blinds.

Blinds Installation FAQ

What is the difference between blinds?

Blinds are window coverings typically made from hard materials such as slats of wood, metal, or plastic. They can be adjusted to allow for more or less light and privacy. Shades, on the other hand, are usually made of a single piece of fabric that is rolled up and down like a curtain.

Should I have window treatments mounted inside or outside the window opening?

The best way to decide is to measure the window opening and compare that measurement against the size of the blinds you are considering. If your window is larger than your blinds, then mounting them outside of the window will give you a more finished look. On the other hand, if your window is smaller than your blinds, then mounting them inside the window frame will allow you to cover more of the window.

What is the best way to hang and install window treatments?

The best way to hang and install window treatments is to use a drill, screws, and anchors. You will need to measure the window frame and mark the spots where you want to mount the brackets. Next, pre-drill holes in these spots for the screws. Finally, insert anchors into each hole and secure the brackets with screws.

How do I clean my new window treatments?

The best way to clean window treatments is to use a vacuum cleaner with a dusting brush attachment. This will help remove any dirt and dust that has accumulated on the blinds. For deeper cleaning, you can use a damp cloth and mild soap solution. Be sure to avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the material of your blinds.
